Native Rain Garden

From soggy and unusable to beautiful and beneficial

This backyard transformation replaced a waterlogged lawn with a native plant rain garden designed to handle stormwater runoff. Using deep-rooted plants, amended soil, and strategic grading, we created a low-maintenance landscape feature that absorbs excess water, reduces flooding, and supports local wildlife — without the need for a traditional drain.

Rain Garden with Native Plants

In Houston, nearly every yard has a soggy spot — a low-lying area that floods during storms and stays muddy for days. While most landscapers rush to install drains, we took a different approach.

For this client, we designed and installed a native plant rain garden: a sunken bed filled with water-loving plants and amended soil that filters runoff and helps recharge the water table. We also added a natural-looking stone path to keep feet dry while accessing the back fence. Now, what was once a muddy problem area is a thriving, low-maintenance habitat for pollinators — and a beautiful part of the landscape.
